The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
