A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
